Found
at the same antique store as my Emerson
724
and Philco PT-41 in 2001 for less than
$5.00. What were the engineers at Philco thinking when they came up
with this one? A truly odd looking radio, it ranks up there with the
Philco
Predicta televisions, with design, and unfortunately quality. As part
of my collection downsize efforts in 2004-2006, this radio was sold at
a local antique shop.
This radio required several repairs to get it
working
and looking good enough to display. The electronics only required
the usual replacement of all paper and electrolytic capacitors, and the
controls received a good cleaning with contact cleaner for electronics.
The case had several cracks, most of which were around the top
clock portion.
The most challenging part was replacing the missing
pushbutton. I inquired online, with no success, the only option was to
manufacture my own. A old knob for a TV was used, since it's shaft was
the same diameter as the pushbutton. After cutting this down to size,
the
center and top were filled in with with automotive Bondo. Once
the button was sanded down to shape, it was painted gold, and later
coated with several coats of clear lacquer. Below center: The final result, the
replacement is the second
button from the left.
