A family friend spotted this radio in a local antique shop around 2002.
The price was rather low, less than $10, so they picked it up for
me. It was a sad sight when I first came into possession of it. The
whole
top of the cabinet had been smashed, the finish was very spotty, not
original, and discolored.
After going over the chassis with all new
capacitors, and a power cord it was playing good. The cabinet was
another story. I began be dismantling what was left of the inside
supports, and re-gluing all of the pieces. It doesn't look perfect, but
the only remaining mark on the cabinet of it's previous damage is a
horizontal crack on the curved top. The cabinet was refinished using
Mohawk brand toner and Deft brand semi
gloss lacquer. The end result doesn't look too bad, other than a ragged
grill cloth. Below: Me with the
PT-41 in 2002, when I first started repairing old radios.
This radio was sold in 2006, part of my continuing downsizing efforts.
